Studio Visit by Fashionista Art Collectors August 19, 2018

Three women holding up paintings of zen chickens.

Zen chickens attracted fashionistas and art collectors Kelsey and Dana to a studio visit in August 2018 in which these 3 zen chickens found new homes.

I was delighted to host these brilliant fashion designers into my studio in August.  Both having been to art schools they understood my art history jokes and references.  We had a really fun visit. Thank you Kelsey and Dana!

Behind the scenes with zen chicken painting
This gestural chicken is a meditation on a confused state of illness. In response to a recent illness I reached for vermilion, my favorite color, to get in touch with my inner turmoil and to promote healing. After the initial vermilion action painting I went into the drawing with a layer of action graphite and finally action sepia ink. The DaDa eye is the last step, a rubber stamp in archival ink that signifies insight. The three layers of action took me to my current healthy state. Thank you zen chicken for the therapy.

I hope this zen chicken will give you a sense of spirited power in your own strengths and the power of art to heal.

Museum of Modern Art and Yoko Ono Exhibit November 7, 2017

Turquoise monoprint of chicken on top of a map of the world surrounded by marching ants.

Starbuck and Stovall collaboration for Yoko Ono’s installation at the Museum of Modern Art.

The Museum of Modern Art commissioned Yoko Ono to create a full-page insert in the New York Times. The resulting artwork, Peace Is Power, invited the newspaper’s readers to add to the map of the world to indicate what areas “need peace.” The participants were asked to send their contributions to the artist’s attention at MoMA. A rotating selection of the Peace is Power submissions is updated periodically through November 2017.

Luanne Stovall and Honoria Starbuck submitted a peace/piece to the exhibition. The collaborative work, featuring Starbuck’s Zen Chicken and Stovall’s Hero Ant, was accepted to be part of the rotating exhibition.

I’m so proud to be part of this event!
